My child hates writing. How can I convince him/her to learn to write?

Even children who are very resistant to writing can learn to love it if they are given the supports needed to be successful.

  1. First, find out why your child hates writing. Does he or she find it difficult? Boring? Pointless? Painful? When your child is sitting down to work on a dreaded writing assignment, simply ask them, “How’s it going?” and then wait for them to give an answer. Keep their answer in mind as you help them get started on the assignment.

  1. For most people, getting started on a writing project is the most difficult part and the part they hate the most. The first step in the writing process is generating topic ideas. Guide your children by helping them generate a list of ideas. This does not mean you do the assignment for them. This means you ask them questions that will help them create a list of ideas. Talking with someone else often helps a writer create a more extensive list. Discuss the importance of choosing to write about something personally meaningful. If your children care about the topic, they will less likely find the assignment boring. If a teacher assigns the subject matter, try to help your children understand the importance the assignment.

  1. Connect writing to play. Creative writing is a great way to get children interested in writing. Some children might say they hate to write, but all children will say that they love to play. Creative writing can easily become an extension of the pretend games that children naturally love. You can help by modeling how this is done. For example, if your child is playing with stuffed animals, dolls or puppets, you can ask him or her to make up a story about the creatures. Your child can act out the story and you can write down what the creatures said. You can then read the story back to your child. Your child will be delighted to see their writing down on paper. Show them how that now they can perform the story again. After a few times of helping your child write down the stories, you can encourage them to do the writing by themselves. They can also be encouraged to do this with friends. Although it might seem just like fun and games to your child, they are learning how to write characters, settings and dialogue.

  1. Show your child how writing is important and useful in your life. Discuss how you use writing in your everyday life and in your career. Have them sit down next to you as you compose a email. Show them how you revise and edit the letter before you send it.

  1. Make writing social. Email and blogs have made writing much more social than ever before. Have your child do an e-mail exchange with a friend or relative so they see that writing is important and used beyond the classroom.

  1. Use a special notebook to record special events like birthdays, holidays and trips. Have each member of the family write something in the notebook. The more your children see you write and enjoy the process, the less likely they will resist.
